Sherritt's Mountain Operations currently consists of the Coal Valley mine and Obed Mountain mine. The Gregg River mine and Coleman properties, all of which are currently inactive, are also controlled by Sherritt.

Coal Valley is located approximately 100 kilometres south of Edson, Alberta, Canada in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. In operation since 1978, the mine sells the majority of its production on the world export market. An on-site processing plant crushes, cleans and dries the coal before it is transported by train to customers or ports for international shipping. Coal Valley coal has a thermal value of ~6,000 k/cal.

In 2004, Coal Valley announced the expansion of its mine to four million clean tonnes per year, doubling the thermal coal production capacity at the mine. This $125 million project doubled the coal wash plant capacity, and added additional mining equipment. This expansion created approximately 150 new permanent jobs at the mine. The expansion was completed in 2006.

Coal Valley Expansion

Sherritt is submitting applications to develop three new areas adjacent to the mine, which would potentially allow Coal Valley to operate at current production levels until 2020.

To sustain the life of the mine, Sherritt is proceeding with applications for mining coal in three new potential areas, adjacent to existing operations at Coal Valley. These areas are known as Mercoal West, Yellowhead Tower and Robb Trend.

The expansion areas are within categories 3 and 4 lands in the eastern portion of the Eastern Slopes Region as defined in the Policy for Coal Development in Alberta. Both categories are suitable for coal exploration and development, subject to meeting the regulatory requirements set out in Alberta legislation.
