Environmental monitoring and emissions reduction

The Moa Metals operation actively monitors soil, surface water, groundwater, process effluents and air. Equipment installed to treat exhaust emissions is expected to eliminate over 90% of hydrogen sulphide emissions.

Greenhouse Gas Management

Through the Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism, Sherritt verified its first credits for Certified Emission Reductions (“CERs”) from Energas S.A.’s Varadero power facility.

Tailings pond management

Metals has improved tailings pond management by enhancing dyke stability and increasing capacity requirements. These changes, along with the addition of a catch basin with a pumping unit for decanted water, have facilitated the recycle of water back into the processing facility and the elimination of berm damage during the rainy season.
