Land reclamation

The Genesee mine in Alberta has received the 2009 Alberta Chamber of Resources' Major Reclamation Award. Click here for details.

Coal is finalizing reclamation and remediation of the 1,300-hectare Gregg River mine area. The removal of processing, maintenance and office facilities – including the recycling of more than 4,000 tonnes of steel – on the last 50 hectares is nearing completion. The land-use objective for the area is to provide wildlife habitat and watershed protection. The protection from hunters and high-quality forage in the area has made it a seasonal range for more than a thousand bighorn sheep. It is also recognized as a productive grizzly bear habitat.

Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs)

Sherritt continues to interact with provincial and federal governments and regulators to develop an appropriate and responsible course of action to address GHGs.

Sherritt is negotiating the sale of a CO2 by-product produced at the Metals refinery for enhanced oil recovery and carbon capture and storage projects. Once complete, this sale is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the site by 30%.

Co-ordinated environmental management

A key member of the Metals management team chairs the Northeast Capital Industrial Association (“NCIA”), which represents 25 industries in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. In 2008, the NCIA held successful discussions with authorities and communities regarding the sustainable management of water and air resources.
