In 2009, Sherritt Technologies, working with Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions (formerly Alberta Energy Research Institute) and other third party technology development partners, officially opened its Clean Coal Technology Centre at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Using both bench and pilot scale facilities, the Centre is focused on developing and adapting technologies to enhance the value of coal and to increase its long term commercial viability and environmental acceptability.
The process-development projects currently being worked on at the Clean Coal Technology Centre include: chemical processing of coal for production of coal liquids that can be converted into high value products, beneficiation for production of higher heating value and lower ash coal, and physical processing and pyrolysis for production of low moisture, thermally stable coal from low rank feeds.
